Braking resistor for variable frequency drive

Principle:

When a fast braking phase occurs on a motor supplied by an inverter, the motor can become a generator (from the inertial mass generated). Then, the motor sends a current towards the IGBT of the inverter, increasing the tension on the inverter DC bus. For security reasons, if this tension becomes too important, the inverter activates a safety mode and the output is turned off, letting the motor stop in "freewheel mode".
Some inverters (like IMO CUB or IMO VXR), are equipped with a transistor which enable to send back the generator current of the motor towards a dissipation resistor, also known as a "braking resistor". Braking is then faster.
